Once again the Huskies left Notre Dame empty-handed, this time with a rugged 65-58 victory that ended a 12- {keyword} game winning streak overall and a stretch of 17 straight victories at Purcell Pavilion. In years past, Connecticut arrived and promptly vanquished Irish home winning streaks of 45 and 29 ga {keyword} mes, becoming maybe the most unwelcome guest in program history.Still, here were the Irish (14-2, 2-1 Big East), languishing on both ends but battling back behind six straight Eric Atkins points to make it a tie game with 64 seconds left and the crowd in full froth. That a swoon immediately followed was as indicative of the day as it was disappointing.Irish guard Jerian Grant was whistled for a perimeter foul, which turned into two free throws for the Huskies' Ryan Boatright. At the other end, Grant drove into traffic, attempted to finish at the rim through a thicket of arms and didn't get a call. Boatright hit another pair from the line at the other end and it was 62-58 and basically hopeless."That's a play I should finish through contact," Grant said. "I felt I got hit on my arm, but I have to finish through the contact. Looking back at it, a nice little pull-up there was open, and that's my game. Definitely have to look at that."Said Atkins, who led the way with 18 points: "It was a tough shot and that was pretty much the game right there. That killed us."After a start that saw Notre Dame hit seven of its first 10 shots and chew up Connecticut in the paint, there was plenty to dampen the mood.Notre Dame shot 37 percent after that sharp start, with the Huskies resetting themselves defensively and annoying the Irish out of rhythm behind the stellar backcourt of Shabazz Napier (19 points) and Boatright. And Connecticut (12-3, 2-1) took charge with scores on seven of eight second-half possessions, shooting 57.7 percent after the b {keyword} reak. The chance at the program's first 3-0 start in Big East play devolved into an unexpected scramble to find what was missing before a Tuesday tilt at St. John's."We definitely thought we were the best team in the Big East," Grant said. "Taking this loss, obviously the standings don't say that. So we have to get our edge back."Twitter @ChiTribHamilton

Carlo Colaiacovo can vouch for forward Damien Brunner: He has a nasty side to him.The two newcomers to the Detroit Red Wings met during December's Spengler Cup. It turns out that Colaiacovo is coming into training camp this month with a sore shoulder, and it's all Brunner's fault. "It was actually Brunner that pushed me from behind into the boards," Colaiacovo said, laughing. He joined a large contingent of teammates forced through one last informal skate today, as they await Saturday's ratification of the collective bargaining agreement and Sunday's start of training camp. The 48-game schedule also should be released Saturday. Colaiacovo expects to be ready for the first game, which is tentatively Jan. 19 at St. Louis, the place he called home the past four seasons. The Wings signed Colaiacovo, who turns 30 on Jan. 27, to a two-year, $5-million deal just before the lockout began in September. Colaiacovo has a tendency to get hurt, but the Wings had to do something to bolster their defense after losing both Nicklas Lidstrom and Brad Stuart.Colaiacovo can move the puck and play on the power play. In 370 career games for Toronto and the Blues, he has 30 goals and 109 assists. Coach Mike Babcock plans, at least for starters, to pair Colaiacovo with Ian White. The two have chemistry dating to when both were Maple Leafs. Colaiacovo had a very favorable first impression of his new team today, and that was even as Pavel Datsyuk remains in Russia to play in this weekend's KHL All-Star Game and Henrik Zetterberg took a day off from skating. "It's my first day with my new teammates, and I'm real happy to be here," Colaiacovo said. "I think the biggest thing I've noticed so far is how much skill we've got up front. Guys are putting the puck in the back of the net like it was their job. It's a real exciting feeling for me."As for Brunner, Colaiacovo has no hard feelings. "It was one of those things," he said. "Obviously, not intentional. It was a tough break there at the end, little stupid play, but it is what it is, and I feel really good right now."I'm hoping to be ready for the start of the season. Each day, it's getting better and each week, it's getting better, stronger. At this point, I'd never thought I'd be feeling this good, so that's definitely something positive."Contact Helene St. James: 313-222-2295 or hstjames@freepress.com. Follow her on Twitter .
